The Goddesses, my current series, begun in 2025, is of large scale paintings of female dieties, sorceresses and spirit beings resurrected and reinterpreted from global origin stories and mythologies of pre-Christian cultures. This series explores the glory both divine and demonic of ancient goddesses and the relevance of the powerful female spirit in contemporary society. The protagonists in my new series represent culturally diverse women associated with metaphysical attributes of wisdom, compassion, desire, creation and destruction. They are depicted within an imagined animistic natural world and alongside animal familiars.
My images ask the viewer to reflect on how we perceive gender identity today in response to our current cultural climate, a time of renewed backlash to Feminism and the rise of a toxic “manosphere” fed by the dark corners and red pill of the internet. My goddess paintings embrace the ferocious and beautiful spirit of female authority in many ancient spiritual traditions. By reimagining those ancient divine beings who were feared and revered in their cultures, and amplifying their lasting influence on our collective psyches today, I am creating a counter balance with a testament to the enduring power of women.
